Mansfield Main Street Improvement Project Underway

MANSFIELD, OH – The City of Mansfield, in partnership with Downtown Mansfield Inc., is pleased to announce the official start of the Main Street Improvement Project, a transformative initiative designed to revitalize Mansfield’s historic downtown corridor. This 18-month project will enhance walkability, improve infrastructure, and create a more vibrant, welcoming Main Street for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

“The Main Street project has been in the works since 2019, and will help us have a more inviting ‘front door’ entrance to our community,” said Mayor Jodie Perry. “This project benefits more than just the City residents since Mansfield serves as the County seat and has many regional offices. I encourage you to support our downtown businesses throughout the construction process and we look forward to cutting the ribbon on a revitalized Main Street next year!”

Project Overview

The Main Street Improvement Project is set to bring major upgrades, including:

· Essential Infrastructure Updates: New water main and storm sewers from 1st to 5th Street.

· Two-Way Traffic: Conversion of Main Street from one-way to improve access to downtown businesses.

· Sidewalk and Streetscape Improvements: Safer, more accessible sidewalks, new hardscape features, and landscaping to beautify the area.

· Upgraded Lighting: Modern lighting for increased visibility and charm.

· Improved Pedestrian Access: New brick crosswalks and intersections along Main Street and in Central Park to enhance safety and create a greater sense of connectedness for pedestrians.

· Preserving Historic Character: Enhancements that preserve and celebrate the charm of downtown Mansfield.

What to Expect During Construction

While the end result will be a more accessible and attractive downtown, the 18 months of construction will require temporary adjustments. Everything possible is being done to minimize disruptions and keep downtown accessible. Here’s what to expect:

· Phased Construction: Work will focus on one intersection or block at a time before moving on to the next area.

· Main Street Will Stay Open: At least one lane will remain open whenever possible to ensure traffic flow.

· Advance Notice of Closures: If a lane or road closure is necessary, the public will receive prior notice. Closures will be limited to the active work zone.

· Businesses Stay Accessible: Downtown shops and restaurants will remain open and accessible throughout the project.

· Utilities Stay On: Essential services like power and water are expected to remain operational during construction.

Project Timeline

The project will be completed in stages over 18 months, with an anticipated completion date of October 31, 2026. Work will begin on the north end of Main Street near 6th Street and proceed southward, ending at 1st Street. Below is a general project timeline:

· Spring – Summer 2025: Installation of new water main and initial streetscape improvements beginning at 6th Street and moving southward.

· Fall 2025 – Winter 2026: Major streetscape enhancements and pedestrian improvements in the Carrousel District and the Central Connector including new sidewalks, lighting, and brick crosswalks.

· Spring 2026: Construction in Central Park and adjacent plazas, enhancing public gathering spaces with improved walkways, landscaping, lighting, and furnishings.

· Summer – Fall 2026: Final road resurfacing, completion of the two-way traffic conversion, and finishing touches to streetscape elements throughout Main Street.
