Fire at Recycling Facility on State Route 39 Causes $20 million in Damage

A fire on New Year’s night at BlueScope Recycling on State Route 39 has caused around $20 million in damage.

According to RichlandSource.com, Shelby Fire Chief, Mike Thompson, said, a motorist reported the fire just before 10 pm and the Shelby fire department arrived on scene 7 minutes later to find the facility engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were on scene battling the fire for over 5 hours, until after 3:30 am Thursday morning.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.

The cause of the fire has not yet been announced.
