Avita Expands Drug Takeback Initiative, Safe Disposal of Medications

BUCYRUS/GALION/ONTARIO – November 19, 2024 – Avita Health System has announced the addition of drug takeback bins at Galion Hospital and Ontario South Campus. The new bins were added in an ongoing effort to combat prescription drug misuse and promote public safety.

This initiative aims to reduce the risk of accidental poisonings, substance abuse, and environmental contamination. Improper disposal of medications can lead to serious health risks and contribute to the opioid epidemic. The bins provide free access for community members to dispose of unwanted and expired medications in a secure, responsible manner.

Avita first launched their drug takeback bin initiative at Bucyrus and Ontario Hospitals in 2018. The recent expansion adds bins in the lobby of Galion Hospital and inside the East Entrance of Ontario South Campus, next to the Walk-In Clinic and Pharmacy. Avita now has four convenient locations for community members to dispose of unwanted and expired medications.

Items that can be safely disposed in the drug takeback bins include prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and veterinary medications. Liquid forms must be sealed in containers. Needles, inhalers, and hazardous materials are not accepted.

The drug takeback bins are monitored regularly and managed by trained personnel to ensure the secure and responsible disposal of collected medications. Avita encourages community members to take advantage of this free resource and spread the word to help raise awareness.
