Mansfield: Suspect Shot, Killed by Police After 3 Hour Hostage Situation

A suspect was shot and killed during a 3 hour hostage situation ended, which ended early Saturday morning just before 5 am., on Cline Ave in Mansfield.

The suspect was identified by the Richland County Coroner Office as 41 year old - Michael Oswalt. The body will be sent for an autopsy on Monday to Montgomery County.

Mansfield Police responded to the scene on a report of domestic violence.

On October 19, 2024, at 1:56 am, officers responded to 200 Cline Ave for a reported domestic violence. Officers encountered a male at the door with a knife. The male fled back inside the residence, which was occupied by his girlfriend and her two small children. The male appeared to be under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Hostage negotiators and the Richland County ASORT team arrived on the scene to begin negotiations. During the three hours of negotiations, the suspect released the two children. A short time later the victim attempted to escape from the suspect which led to a fatal encounter by officers. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and the Richland County Prosecutors arrived on the scene. BCI will be handling the investigation.
