Beginning on Thursday, the Shelby Fire Department will take over transport service for all emergency calls in Sharon and Jackson Townships.

Mayor Steve Schag said this is something that has been talked about for a while, but the decision happened when Superior Ambulance Service, who they previously had a deal with, told them they would need an annual $350,000 subsidy.

City Council recently approved the change and the Shelby Fire Department plans on hiring 3 new employees.  According to RichlandSource.com, right now, the department has 12 full time firefighters, which 5 are certified paramedics.
