Standoff in Mansfield Thursday Ends Peacefully

At approximately 7:47AM this morning, the Mansfield Division of Police responded to 261 East Arch Street after a female called and advised she had just left this residence after a gun was fired. The female caller advised she had a verbal argument with her son, Charles Gandy (B/M/52 years-old), which had led to Mr. Gandy firing a gun outside the home. No one was struck by the bullet. She further stated that her son had mental health issues and may be suffering from PTSD as he had been acting strangely over the past few days.

Officers responded to the residence and attempted to contact Mr. Gandy who refused to open the locked door. Officers set up a perimeter around the residence for safety and began to attempt to coax Mr. Gandy from the home using a PA system as well as through phone contact. Several of Mr. Gandy’s relatives were contacted and they, too, made efforts to coax Mr. Gandy from the home to no avail. This went on for several hours, during which time, Mr. Gandy came to the door a few times, carrying a firearm and yelling at officers “to come get him”.

After much talking and collaborative effort by many at the scene, Mr. Gandy peacefully surrendered to officers and he was taken into custody at 1:01PM without incident. Mr. Gandy was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and/or treatment. A firearm was located in the residence and charges are pending in this case.

It is with great relief that this incident ended well and without injury to anyone. The Mansfield Division of Police would like to thank the regional Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) and the Ontario Police Department for their assistance during this incident.
