Ashland County Man Dies In Crash On US 250

Chester Township – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred at 10:36 a.m. on US-250 east of Rathburn Rd. in Chester Township in Wayne County.

The crash involved a blue 2010 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Steven E. Swafford 64, of Homer, Michigan, and a red 2004 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Russell Nowell 63, of Polk, Ohio.

Initial investigation revealed Mr. Swafford was westbound on US-250. Mr. Nowell was traveling eastbound on US-250. Mr. Nowell drove left of center striking Mr. Swafford’s vehicle head on. Both vehicles traveled off the north side of the roadway after impact.

Mr. Nowell was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Mr. Swafford was transported by Wooster Township Fire Department to Wooster Community Hospital. He was later transported by Metro Life Flight to Akron City Hospital.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Reconstruction Unit, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted on scene.

Alcohol does not seem to be a factor in this crash. Mr. Swafford was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
