Fighting for Fatherhood Workshop In Mansfield, June 19 – June 21

The Starts Within Organization Presents Fighting for Fatherhood

Free and interactive father focused workshop

Mansfield, OH

In recognition of committed and supportive fathers every June the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on behalf of the Ohio Commission on Fatherhood awards mini-grants to nonprofit organizations to host events that promote father-child engagement. Two-time grant recipient, The Starts Within Organization is planning a father focused workshop designed to celebrate, educate, and empower. In addition to facilitating responsible parenting conferences, the organization also administers reentry focused programming inside of institutions across the state of Ohio. For the past seven years, the organization's Walking Logo program has partnered with professionals to provide structured education and mentoring initiatives to incarcerated participants prior to release from prison. Additionally, the organization's Father Within program delivers a solid understanding of parenting principals and received a grant in November 2019 to facilitate a concentrated father focused curriculum to incarcerated or community-based fathers in Richland County, Ohio.

The Starts Within Organization in conjunction with various community partners will be hosting a Fighting for Fatherhood Workshop on June 19 – June 21, 2020. This event will provide relevant information to combat some of today's parenting challenges as well as explain how interactive engagement tools can be used to empower fathers. Carlos Christian will facilitate the workshop and feature guest speakers Glenn Harris and Ebony Taylor. Collectively they will be discussing topics such as navigating the legalities of fatherhood, building parental influence through communication, and the foundational elements of an exemplary father figure. The Fighting for Fatherhood Workshop is a free event where participants can enjoy food, gifts, and other resources. Social distancing guidelines for the workshop include sessions with no more than ten participants and personal protective equipment for each attendee. Sessions are two and a half hours in duration running consecutively from 9-11:30 AM, 12-2:30 PM, and 3-5:30 PM. Participants should attend only one session and pre-registration is required. The Fighting for Fatherhood Workshop will be held at North End Community Improvement Collaborative, 134 N. Main St. Mansfield, Ohio 44902. To pre-register or obtain more information about the workshop please call (614) 741-6748 or email etaylor.startswithin@gmail.com. Immediately following the 3-5:30 PM session on Friday, June 19 Carlos will also be appearing at the Mansfield Juneteenth celebration.

The Starts Within Organization was created in 2011 to decrease recidivism rates in the state of Ohio. Before founding the organization, Carlos Christian was incarcerated at the Marion Correctional Institution from 1997-2007.

After his release, Carlos continued to pursue a dedicated course of personal development which led to entrepreneurship, publishing two books about reentry and a third about responsible parenting, as well as and receiving several awards related to his advocacy work. The core message Carlos embedded into the organization centers around making the necessary internal changes that result in positive external changes. The Starts Within Organization continues to engage non-offending members of society and support incarcerated populations ensuring that offending individuals are given opportunities to increase self-worth and understand the importance of societal contributions to reenter society as holistically restored citizens.

An overview of Carlos' featured appearances and other Starts Within presentations can be viewed on Ohio's Department of Rehabilitation & Correction website.
