Independent Living Center COVID-19 Food Distribution Set For May 4th

THE INDEPENDENT LIVING CENTER OF NORTH CENTRAL OHIO is a non-residential, community-based organizations run by and for individuals with disabilities. Our Center works with individuals with disabilities to empower them to take control of their lives and decide what independence means to them.

Planning is one of the creative thins we can do. This pandemic has presented an opportunity for us to step up and support our consumers. Our Center is sponsoring a fresh food distribution for our registered consumers.

We have arranged a fresh produce and dairy distribution. This will take place on Monday, May 4, 2020 at the Independent Living Center. We want to thank Holthouse Farms and the Community Market for providing the produce and dairy products, and for supporting our local community. We are also adding a food card from Meijer’s in Ontario for the purchase of special dietary or personal needs.

We will be providing this service to approximately 300 of our consumers in a no touch operation. We want to extend a huge thank you to Graham’s Automall for the ‘helping hands’ to unload the trucks and stage the boxes for distribution. We also want to thank the United Way and many volunteers who have helped to put this together and will be here to help complete this distribution.

We are strongest when we unite as a community and we will get through this together, one day at a time.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IF YOU NEED OR WANT ANYTHING ELSE:

WHO WE ARE:

The term "center for independent living" means a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, nonresidential private nonprofit agency that is designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities and provides an array of independent living services.

CORE SERVICES:

We provide Core Services in System and Individual Advocacy, Information & Referral, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills training, and Institutional Transition, Youth Transition, and Diversion Services.

We work collaboratively with many community organizations and businesses to enhance services.

HEART OF INDEPENDENCE:

Through Ohio SILC and the CILs, we strive to provide individuals with disabilities – regardless of age – with the same opportunities as everyone else. We want them to: Choose where they want to live; Choose where they want to work; Lead the lives they want; and Make decisions about their lives.

Many of us take the small things in life for granted. Through the work of the Ohio SILC and the Centers for Independent Living we want those same choices available to the 1.6 million people with disabilities in Ohio.

The centers do not tell individuals how to live their lives. Rather, they mentor and guide them through the process of achieving their self-identified goals.

It was established in 1993, located in Ontario, Ohio.

Ohio is home to 12 Centers for Independent Living (CILs).

It is a statutory requirement that a majority of the board members and staff of the centers be individuals with disabilities, giving them the unique ability to provide resources and advocacy based on first-hand experience.
