A teacher in the Lexington school district this week, received an award that is handed out to just 5 educators statewide each year.

Cheryl Longnecker, who teaches special education at Eastern Elementary, has been with the Lexington school district for 30 years. She was surprised with the TORCH award, which stands for "Teachers of Ohio Representing Character and Heart."

New Lexington superintendent Jeremy Secrist said, Longnecker was so happy to receive the award, she broke into tears. Secrist said she has had such a positive influence on kids and their families in the Lexington school district.

Longnecker told WMAN, the entire Lexington district has been amazing during the pandemic.

Longnecker is a Shelby graduate and was a part of the 1983 Shelby girls basketball state championship team.
