Former Mansfield Police Chief Receives Award

Lawrence "Bunk" Harper, Mansfield's first Black police officer and police chief, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony at the Dan Lew Exchange Saturday. According to RichlandSource.com, Harper received the award as one of about 20,000 Black Marines who trained at Montford Point, North Carolina, during World War II. Harper passed away in 2016 at 89 after 54 years with Mansfield Police, having been made Chief in 1990.
