Governor DeWine Seeking Federal Assistance To Help Ohio Farmers

Governor Mike DeWine says he has formally asked the federal government for a disaster designation due to the heavy rains across the state which have delayed the spring planting season.

DeWine's office yesterday said it had submitted the request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help provide relief for more than 70-thousand Ohio farmers.

Record rainfalls amounts have plagued the state's agriculture this year, causing standing water in the fields which make it impossible to plant or move equipment. Officials said they estimated barely 50 percent of the state's corn crop and 32 percent of the soybean crop has been planted this year as opposed to 2018 when 96 percent of both crops were in the ground by early June.
