Washington Post Journalist to Speak at Ashland University

Robert Samuelson, a journalist who writes a twice weekly syndicated column on business and economics issues for The Washington Post, will speak on the topic of “Spoils Society” at the Ashbrook Center’s Major Issues Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 12, at 12 noon in Myers Convocation Center on the Ashland University campus.

Tickets for this lunch and lecture event are $20 per person or $160 for a table of eight. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Carrie Clever at cclever@ashbrook.org or 419-289-5411.

Samuelson has written for The Washington Post since 1977 and also has written for Newsweek magazine. He is also the author of Untruth: Why the Conventional Wisdom is (Almost Always) Wrong and The Good Life and Its Discontents: The American Dream in the Age of Entitlement, 1945-1995.

In a third book, The Good Life and Its Discontents: The American Dream in the Age of Entitlement, 1945-1995, Samuelson writes: “We didn’t merely expect things to get better. We expected all social problems to be solved…We transformed the American Dream into the American Fantasy.” Much of Samuelson’s work focuses on how and why Americans have come to expect more from politics, economics and culture than what is realistic, leading to inevitable disappointment.

Samuelson has won many awards, including being named as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Government from Harvard University.
