Smoke Forces Inmates to Evacuate Richland Correctional Institution

Over 500 inmates had to evacuate the Richland Correctional Institution on Wednesday, after smoke was coming from a vent inside the building.  RichlandSource.com reports a pulley malfunction caused a belt in the ducts to begin smoking.  Workers were able to fix the problem and the inmates, which were moved to a different room, were back inside their housing by around 2:40 pm. Prison officials do not believe any inmate tampered with the vent.
