A male student is now in police custody after he brought an Airsoft pellet gun to school. The gun was found in his possession outside Mansfield Senior High School before the start of school Tuesday (March 6, 2018) morning. The gun was never inside the school. The boy, who had reportedly made threats against another student, ran and discarded the gun when he saw law enforcement officers. Police apprehended the boy and recovered the gun. Airsoft guns fire pellets and often are made to look like real guns.
Superintendent Brian Garverick said other students notified the Senior High resource officer after they saw the gun in the boy's waistband while he was on a school bus. The normal school day resumed shortly after 8 a.m. Parents who arrived to take their children home were allowed to do so after showing proper identification.
