Friends of Ashland Public Library 40th Year Anniversary Celebration

Were you aware the Friends of the Ashland Public Library, a non-profit group of volunteers, have been supporting the Ashland Public Library for 40 years? In that time, the group has raised over a quarter million dollars, which is used to fund materials and programming that falls outside of the library’s regular budget. In recognition of this anniversary, a celebration will be held on the same day as their summer book sale, Saturday, July 15, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., on the patio on the south side of the library.

Celebration guests will enjoy decorate-your-own cupcakes (gluten-free ones will also be available), games, and a scavenger hunt, where kids can win a coupon for a free book to redeem at the sale.  Also, all children’s books, which include both paperback and hardcover, will be priced at 25 cents each during the July sale, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The group accepts donations of gently used books, DVDs, CDs, recent magazines, and vinyl records for resale at the sales. The following items are not accepted: textbooks, encyclopedias, outdated magazines (more than one year old), and mildewed and/or moldy books. Donations should be brought in through the rear entrance of the library, where a donation bin is located.

Due to limited space, it would be helpful to make donations well before the week of the sale. The group’s active volunteers work tirelessly during sale week to prepare the rooms and organize the items; a flood of donations during this time actually hinders their efforts.

Joining the Friends of the Ashland Public Library group is as easy as filling out a short application and paying a small membership due. Standard individual membership is $5.00; student membership is $2.00. Other rates can be found on the membership application, which is available at the library and on the library’s website, www.ashland.lib.oh.us. Members of the group get access to the members sale, which is held the Thursday prior to the public sale from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The group also accepts new memberships on the day of the member sale.

Consider joining the group as an active member and become a core volunteer. As they accept donations year-round, the group is in constant need of volunteers to sort books, make recycling runs, and set up and staff the book sales. Volunteering your time is a great way to support the library.
