About four miles of roads in Madison Township are on the list for chip-seal work this year. From Richland Source, trustees held a special meeting on July 11 to approve advertisements for bids to chip and seal for seven stretches of road. The board will open bids on Aug. 5 and work is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Trustee Dan Fletcher shared the list of roads included in the bid package.

  • Trimble Road from the end of the curb at Ohio 39 north to Poth Road
  • Poth Road north to the Mansfield city limits
  • Hanna Road from Trimble Road east to the city limits
  • Ridge Road from State Route 430 south to Michael Drive
  • Walker Avenue from State Route 430 south to Bonnie Drive
  • Hickory Lane from State Route 39 east to Ford Road

The township has about $350,000 in the road fund this year including carryover funds from 2023. Trustees will split the costs of paving Home Road with Springfield Township.

Madison trustees approved a $310K contract with Sarver Paving in Ashland at their June 3 meeting for resurfacing about four miles of roads. Trustees agreed to ask Sarver Paving for a cost estimate for 1.5 inches of asphalt on Brace Avenue.

“Let’s do it and see how long it lasts,” said trustee Tom Craft.

Brace Avenue resident James Carroll and 5th Avenue resident Jerry Whitehead asked trustees in June to look at paving the street, which houses the township road garage and salt shed. Fletcher said he would like to use American Rescue Plan Act funds to replace the salt shed.

The township applied for a state grant from the H2Ohio River Incentive Chloride Reduction program in January and was not awarded funds for the first round of funding, but will be eligible for a second round using the same application.

Also in Monday’s meeting:

  • Trustees approved Fire Chief Ken Justus’ request to list Medic 73, a 2015 ambulance, on GovDeals. The board set a $40,000 reserve for the unit.
  • Trustees held an executive session to discuss employment in the road department. The board did not take any action after coming out of the meeting.
  • Trustees approved the township’s tax budget projections for $6.6 million in estimated revenue.
