In Shelby, City Council has been discussing a proposal from the Richland County Board of Elections to extend their candidate filing deadline to 90 days.

According to RichlandSource.com, Shelby’s charter currently has the deadline at 75 days.

The Board of Elections said, every other government entity in the county uses 90 days and would help immensely in preparing ballots for voters.

One member of Shelby City Council mentioned, an earlier deadline could limit the number of candidates. A second reading on the matter is planned for next week. If approved by council, it would appear in front of Shelby voters in November.
