Felonious Assault/Shots Fired Calls
The Mansfield Division of Police responded to a “shots fired” call at 285 Cline Avenue, Chelsea Square Apartments, yesterday evening at approximately 9:21PM. Upon arrival, officers found approximately 30 shell casing in the driveway area. A short time later, a call was received from Ohio Health that a gunshot victim, had drove himself to the hospital and was being treated for his injuries. Officers contacted the victim, Bakari Young (B/M/23 YOA) at the hospital emergency room where he was being treated. The victim advised officers that he had went to the apartments to drop off food to a family member, when he was shot at in the driveway area. The victim advised he did not know who shot at him and refused to provide any additional information to officers.
During the course of the investigation, officers spoke to witnesses at the scene who refused to provide statements to officers. The vehicle the victim was driving when he was shot, was seized for evidence at the hospital as it had approximately a dozen bullet holes in it. It is unknown what led up to the shooting or how many shooters were involved. No other details are being released at this time as detectives continue to investigate.
In an earlier incident, a “shots fired” call in from the area of 750 Burns Street at approximately 7PM yesterday in which a witness described several young black males, dressed in black clothing, shooting at each other prior to officer’s arrival. The witness further advised that all the shooters left in two dark colored vehicles. No injuries were reported from this incident. Numerous shell casings were collected at the scene. Major Crimes detectives are working to see if the two incidents are related.
At approximately 12:35AM, officers on patrol heard numerous shots fired coming from the area of West 1st Street and Mulberry Street, which was west of their location. Officers immediately responded to the area at which time they observed several subjects running west through backyards.
2 Additional officers arriving in the area were able to locate two of the subjects in a yard on Blymyer Avenue and take them into custody without incident. Upon checking the area where the gunshots came from and where the subjects were initially observed before running; 4 handguns, including one that was shown as stolen, were located on the ground. The two subjects who were caught, both male juveniles, admitted to being in possession of a handgun. Both were charged with a firearm offense and incarcerated at the Richland County Juvenile Attention Center.
