Franklin Township – The Ohio State Patrol’s Mansfield Post is investigating a two vehicle fatal crash which occurred on July 21, 2020. The crash at approximately 12:44 p.m., on Bowman Street Road just north of Amoy East Road in Franklin Township, Richland County.
Colin A. Grassick, 28, of Galion, was driving a 2009 Ford Escape, north on Bowman Street Road. Mr. Grassick drove left of center and struck Melvin G. Sparks, who was driving south on Bowman Street Road in a 2007 Freightliner Semi.
Mr. Grassick was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both of his juvenile passengers were transported from the scene. A two year old male passenger succumbed to his injuries at Nationwide Children’s Hospital after being flown from Ohio Health Mansfield. The second passenger, a six year old female, is recovering at Ohio Health Mansfield. Mr. Sparks was transported to Ohio Health Mansfield with minor injuries and was later discharged. All occupants of both vehicles were properly restrained.
The crash remains under investigation. It is unknown at this time whether alcohol or drugs are a factor in the crash. Assisting agencies include Franklin Township Fire/EMS, Community EMS, MedFlight, and the Richland County Coroner’s Office
